KonMari Method

According to Marie Kondo (Japan’s famed Organizing Consultant), her KonMari Method of tidying up, organizing your home/space will bring about a phenomenal change to your lifestyle and mindset.

The first criteria is to remove objects that does not spark off joy’ for you; for example, as you go through the mountain- pile of clothes on the floor – you’ll pick up each piece and ask yourself ‘am I happy wearing this piece of clothing?‘ and if the answer is no, chances of you wearing it in the future is zilch, and hence it should go into the ‘trash/donate-away’ pile. In addition, KonMari method suggest that we should tidy/organize by categories (clothes, shoes, books etc.) and not by space. Now, don’t ask me what follows on from here….because I’ve yet completed the book 🙂

Nonetheless, taking account of her first criteria – this morning as I looked around my room – at the paintings, framed pictures on the walls, my vintage mirror that takes up a sizeable portion of the room – I concluded that it no longer serves its purpose or brings me joy of waking up and staring at those framed photos that I painstakingly put together from travels or that precious painting that I lugged back from Bali eons ago.

Now I am not sure with the ongoing of the past week, will anything ‘spark off joy’ for me, and what is at stake is knowing that I may potentially wake up one fine morning, screaming bloody murder, with the unfolding realization of knowing that I did not pack those prized memorabilia into the store room, and it’s either gone down the chute or passed onto the neighborhood cleaner.

Well, either way – I’ll move on from it. I must say, it’s pretty cool to have a rather, bare room now. De-cluttering space, internally and externally.

Challenge, accepted.
