On my recent work trip to Seoul, I began to recall childhood memories of Mrs. Polo, her antique shop and alluring memories of my childhood life in New Rochelle. Now, there’s simply no linkage of Seoul and that aspect of my life, but yes my hippocampus must have found something weirdly in common and decided to trigger the burst of potential actions (from my end).

After one of those nights of too much Max Beer and sleep was a faraway activity (bless me), I decided to embark on a Google search for Mrs.Polo, to be honest I was pretty sure even if I did find her chances of her remembering me was pretty slim or her manifestation into an Angel playing with Lucky over rainbow bridge, was also a probability.

To cut the story short, it wasn’t a tough search – and sadly to say, my instinct was right as I found her obituary online, which led to me looking for her daughter, of whom has the same beautiful name as her Mother, Maude.

I wasn’t sure would she be the same Maude (Jr) or would she even remember me as too, but went on to drop an email (again, not a painstakingly search at all, gotta love the WWW or should I say the stars were all aligned for me. Thanks, Mrs. Polo) and within a day received an email with the following content that left me with a bright smile and fat teardrops for a good part of the day …

Oh Jasmine. I remember you soooooo well. My mom just loved you. Sadly, she became ill around 2000 or so. Had a disease called Lewy Body…the worst of the dementias. I took care of her until she passed in 2008.
In her papers I have pictures of you and letters from you. She kept your picture on her dresser until we sold the house!
Are you in the states? I’d love to see or hear from you. Big Hug!
The last time I saw Mrs. Polo and Maude was a good 23 years back and it breaks my heart to know, there were opportunities to re-visit the childhood hunts and city, but I was too caught up in gearing my life towards a certain path, direction that I missed out on a dear someone who held me in her heart all these years.

Come December, I’ve chosen not to visit the childhood haunts but planned for outings/dates with those that carved a special place in my heart, from New Rochelle to Mt. Vernon. Even though, I won’t have a chance to see Mrs. Polo, life has once again granted me an opportune  to see her daughter. We’ve made plans for a day together reminiscing Mrs. Polo, life and all those beautiful past and present that makes life enticingly charming.
