If someone was to tell me towards the end of 2013 that I’ll be spending few months in Tokyo, I would probably think they’re crazy and out of their mind. Simply, because the end of 2013 and into 2014, I was in a state of not knowing what I wanted to do with my career, since leaving my job in Oct 2013. I like to joke that I’m going through an early 30’s crisis with large bouts of uncertainty, the need to wander away, and throw in a huge mix-mash of other emotions.
My initial plan was to start with the job hunt right after Lunar New Year – to embark on my post grad studies and get into a comfortable routine, once again. However, life does like to throw things at us – when we least expect it, and so when the unexpected opportunity came for me to work in this beautiful country, I jumped and shouted loudly ‘High, Mochiron!!’ (Yes, ofcourse). Blessed to have supportive parents and my innermost circle of pals, who gave their utmost encouragement to go ahead and follow my heart. Thank you, lovelies!
It’s been a week here and I’m slowly getting into the routine – and my bearings around the work and residential area. The Tokyo metro line still confuses me, despite it being my fourth trip here! But I totally dig getting lost and wandering into small alleys always excites me (sounds like I’m looking for trouble!).
My dwelling space -is a shoebox apartment that’s easily accessible and cozy enough for someone who values highly in personal space , solitude and like the fact that everything is within my reach. The area is also great for my night strolls and supermarket runs to pick up the freshest strawberries and Hokkaido plain yogurt.
So yes, I am settling fairly well and liking the fact that I have a good balance at work – learning the Japanese work environment and dynamics – as well as, discovering this beautiful place, during my leisure time.
