This article was very helpful in providing the scientific backdrop in understanding and confirming my assumptions on my roller-coaster ride with cravings (food).

My cravings can get ridiculously out of control, underlying factors: hormonal imbalance, irritability and mood swings. Lethal, destructive forces in my book. And during such period of time, I’ll go on a self- proclaimed hibernation or risk shooting my mouth and being cast away by the love/close ones :).

The realization came last year when I hit my all-time lowest and figured small changes in my lifestyle and habits was needed pronto to ensure all underlying destruction of my well-being was given absolute attention. As the article suggest there’s various ways to break the cycle through nutrition, adequate rest, exercise etc but we all know what works for one may not work for the other, so my 2 cents worth for fellow girlfriends out there – be aware of your issues (only you know best where the craving is coming from and why), don’t fear and be open to discovering what works for you through rounds of trial and error.

It took me a good 6 months to somewhat realize how I should go about handling my  underlying issues above and beyond the cravings and here’s some of them;

1. Exercise – gym-ing and running has been a great combination for me. Yes, I do slack and god forbids work does keep me away but when I sense the serotonin dipping; there’s no ignoring the inside banter of – get on your exercise gear and butt to the gym or park for a run.

2. Meditation -am still on the learning path but thus far, it has brought on a tremendous positivity and focus in my life, especially when I sense negativity around the corner or when the mood sways and energy feels zapped out.

3. Food – opting for healthier options and cutting myself some slack and saying its ok to have that plate of spaghetti or truffle fries.
* Separation dietary habits works quite well for me, of which carbohydrates and proteins are not taken together. Ex: rice with vegetables or meat with vegetables – *note to self* definitely a dietary habit that I need to work harder on.

4. Being Zen  – it’s never that easy but yes, letting go and being zen with all the occurrences in life, does allow one to see things from a less harsher, disallowing perspective.

No doubt there’s a long way to go on this holistic path but as in all things in life, it’s the process and I know for the sake of  a healthier me- physical, mental and emotional – this is a path I won’t missed out on.
