I finally got to watch 那些年,我们一起追的女孩 on Tuesday after hearing so much on it and suggesting to peeps traveling to Taiwan in Sept/Oct (when it opened there) to catch it. All came back with superb feedback, so you bet I was itching for it to be shown in our local cinemas.
And, just so when there’s a certain amount of built-up hype and expectations for a movie and you, finally get to watch it yourself…it does get a bit sad when you walked out feeling, the movie was just mediocre and not as fantastic as you thought this coming of age story would be.
Now, don’t get me wrong the storyline, casting and ending was good (and unexpected). It shed light into the director’s life, his growing up peeves and the shaping of his creative, literary talent – it definitely gave me a better insight to how he weaves out such captivating stories of all genre.
What got to me of course was the over-exposed jokes, yes it was funny when heard the first time..but repetitive play throughout the show made it annoyingly hard to follow and certain scenes just fell right through the crack.
With that said, would I recommend it to peeps that have not caught it? Yes, I would…there’s faults in the flick (like all other flicks) but the essence and originality of the movie was it’s biggest draw – especially if you grew up in the 90s and heavily influenced or in-tune to Taiwanese music, entertainment and lifestyle.
My growing up years was indeed influenced and peppered by Taiwanese influence – so yes, the movie wasn’t fantastic but it did transport me back to the 90s and the life I shared with my Taiwanese 哥哥s and 姊妹s. Such endearing memories that will forever be etched to my growing up years.
And that, to me was the biggest attraction of this movie.
