Mid- Autumn Festival has never been a big deal for me growing up in the States. The folks never made it a tradition to buy lanterns from Chinatown and have me parade it around the house but what they did do was ensure there was a nice dinner with family friends in the porch under the moonlight, and of course the mandatory box of moon cakes and Chinese tea.

Henceforth, all Chinese festivals celebrated in the household growing up has resonated within the little me to symbolize one thing – time spent with family or family friends filled with good food and togetherness. Traditions is loosely practice (at times!) with such festivities but in the grander scheme of it all – it strengthens the bonds between each and everyone of us, be it family or friends.

Yesterday night was no different – the (he) teenager manned the pit with earphones on and music blasting away and nary a care to the world around him. Little ones were chasing each other in playground – each had their angry birds lantern (whatsup with that?!!) , the Uncles sat themselves apart from the rest sipping on wine and talking about the world and beyond, and the topic of the evening for the Aunties – plastic surgery. One has just gone under the knife and was eager to relate her encounter.

I, and the other (she) teenager took a small stroll around the estate and sat ourselves at the edge of the pool and talked about school, life after O’s and her plan. She’s growing up to be a fantastic young adult with a great head on her shoulders.

So, the essence of my mid autumn festival embodies nothing but the simplest pleasure in life.

Happy Belated Mid-Autumn Festival, Friends!
