On Chu 7 (7th day of the Lunar New Year), the fogies and I took a drive into Kulai to visit Dad’s old friend. Uncle Seng has devoted a good 20 years of his life to the temple; shedding all materialistic gains for a life of simplicity. Two years ago he decided to donate part of his 10 acre land for temple construction, enabling devotees in the surrounding township to have a place of worship and faith cultivation. He tells us the temple grounds is going to cater to devotees of all ages; for example a small farm for little kids to play and hold farm animals – in hope that city kids that come to the temple will have the chance to experience nature and it’s beyond.
He’s also left a small piece of land for his own abode – he tells me that there’s no better way to walk the last chapter of his life than embracing and living in nature.
I’m extremely proud of him – Uncle Seng was a very wealthy and successful businessmen, certain occurrences in life changed him and lead him onto this path. When we parted he gave me a small pat on my head and said ‘Look beyond the surface, my dear…true happiness is from within and once you have hold of it, no one will be able to take that away from you’.
Of course, he wouldn’t let us leave without bringing some bananas from the various banana trees he has surrounding the land home with us;
Now, the fogies can’t wait to head back during the durian season!
